Broken Mirrors by Marie McWilliams

Publisher/date: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (March 31, 2018)

Genre: Crime Thriller

"You are free to choose. But you are not free from the consequences of your choice."

Marie and Malcolm are the classic love at first sight story. Except that Malcolm is a mafia don.

This is the gritty no-holds-barred tale of a girl who falls in love with a boy, the boy kills people, she finds out, and she stays. Then Detective Fraser comes along and falls in love with Marie and wants to save her.

But can you save someone who doesn't want to be saved?

I hadn't read a good crime drama in a while when I picked this up from Marie McWilliams, an author I follow on Instagram. But the cover was thrilling - I'm a sucker for skulls, what can I say? So I was shocked by the contents of this book.

You see, when you're married to a mobster, something really bad is going to happen eventually. It's just that normally it happens to other people. This time, it's Marie who is the target.

I've read so much YA that I just expect someone to be saved before something truly terrible happens to someone. This is not that sort of story people. If you have any sort of triggers at all, don't read this book. There is murder, torture, and rape, brutal and terrible. This is the type of story where there are no good guys, just varying levels of bad. Just my type!

The only thing that didn't work for me was the length. I wanted more. I think the suspense could have been built to a fever pitch if the time between when Marie finds out that she is a target to her Marie's inevitable kidnapping would have been extended. Enough storyline to really build the fear of what you know is coming. And maybe throw in a good plot twist.

But all in all, a good book, and I'd pick up another by Marie McWilliams!
